Vincent van Gogh

The permanent collection should answer the question about the infancy of the most famous artist in Brabant. In addition, the museum exhibition offers room for artists who are, or were, inspired by Van Gogh.

The part 'Roots of Vincent van Gogh" is designed like a house pending the return of its residents. In this case the Van Gogh family. The interior is covered with white dust covers, an atmosphere of silence and desolation is present. The larger than life self-portrait of Vincent looks at the visitors when they come up the stairs to the exhibition space, but only when a visitor enters, the house comes to life. It gives voice to memories of the residents, like when the secretaire starts writing a letter on its dust cover, a letter from Vincent. On the audio tour, narrated by actor Jochum ten Haaf, 'Vincent' explains for various exhibits, the significance of the memories for him. How he was tried and tested by this landscape projected on wall and table. The family photos – touch-screens – on the dresser tell the visitor who they are and how they relate to Vincent.

Kinkorn has explicitly chosen not to reproduce work of Van Gogh by means of projections or prints to decorate walls / doors / glass and so to cheer up the house. Visitors are required to imagine the work themselves, aided by the house of Vincent's roots, inspiration and resources. After the interactive living room, the visitor is led into a small film theatre where interviews with artists help make it clear how big the influence and inspiration of Van Gogh's work still is to this day. Works by these artists hang on the walls so that the visitor can observe how they were inspired. Visitors can then cross the corridor to the temporary exhibition part. In this space of the museum there is always an exhibition about an artist who strongly affiliates (or affiliated) himself to Van Gogh. In succession 'Zadkine and Van Gogh', 'Van Vught and Van Gogh', 'Raveel and Van Gogh', 'Apple and Van Gogh' and 'Rainer and Van Gogh' were designed by Kinkorn.
